Scott, talk us through the concept of The Edge HPL and what makes it such a game-changer in the world of nutrition and wellbeing.

I have always wanted The Edge HPL to be a wonderful and transformative experience for those who place their trust in us; a space where people can discover new sides to themselves, gain clarity, and use the power of food to thrive in an ever-demanding world.

Our approach is unique because we combine cutting-edge science with creativity to deliver an exceptional and supportive experience for our clients – with our values of integrity, respect and care at the very core.

Our ultra-personalised nutritional support programmes, coupled with our state-of-the-art health and performance tests, are trusted by many of the world’s best high performers, but we really enjoy supporting people from all walks of life – from busy executives and entrepreneurs to parents and small families (each person is a ‘high performer’ in their own right!).

We discovered a method to support our clients both in-person and fully remotely – which has created many wonderful experiences for us all and has provided the opportunity to support some truly incredible people, all with different stories, goals and ambitions.

When I first started The Edge HPL a few years ago, I wanted to create a business that stands out for the right reasons, not only because of our mission to provide unparalleled service but because of our friendly yet professional approach to changing lives for the better. For me, this is our ultimate metric of success.

Why is what we eat so important, and how do you incorporate testing into tailored programmes to determine the best plan for each of your clients?

Looking after your nutrition is one of the most effective ways to enhance your overall health, wellbeing and energy levels.

Each year, most people have >1,000 opportunities to fuel and nourish their body to enhance their quality of life (3 meals per day x 365 days = 1,098 meal opportunities), but this is often made more difficult than it needs to be given the vast amount of nutrition information available.

I love this quote because it holds true in many different fields, and the world of food and ‘healthy living’ is certainly no exception. Now more than ever, we live in a world of mass- and misinformation and, through no fault of our own, we often fall victim to choice paralysis, which leaves many of us swaying in the wind.

At The Edge HPL, we provide our clients with complete clarity and direction when it comes to matching their nutritional requirements to their short- and long-term goals. We take the time to learn about the world that they live in and subsequently tailor our approach so that our solutions are aligned with their unique lifestyle, goals and preferences.

The health and performance tests we offer completely eliminate the ‘one size fits all’ approach to nutrition. Rather, they enable us to take a deep dive into our client’s unique physiology and metabolism before finding the keys to match their individual requirements. Essentially, our gold-standard tests remove all guesswork and help our clients reach their goals faster.

How can the right diet aid performance, sleep, health and even weight management?

The foods you choose to eat on a daily basis can impact your life in a myriad of ways. Whether that’s having more energy at work or at play or optimising your physical and mental health to enhance your overall quality of life – the list goes on, and food is a major player.

Ultimately, food can either work for you or against you – especially over the long term. This doesn’t mean eating well – whether for health, performance, or aesthetics – needs to be bland, boring or restrictive. In fact, and often to our client’s surprise, it is quite the opposite, provided if it’s done right.

We find ways to incorporate our client’s favourite foods into their lifestyle; we encourage them to discover new ingredients (such as Teff), experiment with recipes and open up the world of food so that they can reap all of the benefits it has to offer.

It’s one thing knowing what’s best to do, but we find that where most people struggle is being able to actually do it consistently in a way that is enjoyable, easy and effective. In our experience, this is where the real beauty lies.

What services are offered at your flagship clinic in Surrey?

We offer a breadth of support services that are tailored to each person’s unique goals, requirements and budget.

From 1:1 consultations on specific topics to year-round support where we help our clients develop a lifestyle around food that works for them – I would like to think there is nothing our practitioners can’t help with.

Where requested, we also enjoy collaborating with our client’s support team, including personal aids and chefs, as well as catering teams and restaurants to support our client’s needs in any way that we can, wherever in the world they may be.

Our health and performance tests can be undertaken at our state-of-the-art practice in Leatherhead, Surrey – or at our client’s preferred location for convenience.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give our readers and clients in preparing for the summer months ahead when it comes to their wellbeing and dietary needs?

Across the past few years, we’ve been fortunate to support around 30 world champions across multiple sports. Perhaps what has struck me most is the fact that they all have a very small support team – they take advice from a small number of experts whom they trust implicitly. A parallel with my previous comments, this prevents them from being struck with choice paralysis and swaying in the wind. Instead, they have clarity, direction and confidence.

As such, my best advice, especially when it comes to nutrition and healthy living, would be to take advice from one – or a small number of – experts who understand your unique world and whom you can trust, depend on and enjoy working alongside. Whether you consider us or other great practitioners in the space, I would hope that it is one of the best investments you can make in your current and future self.

If you would like to start right away, here are three tips!

  1. Upon waking, drink a glass of water with an electrolyte to rehydrate and start your day right. Set up a ‘cue’ by placing a glass (or electrolytes) next to your toothbrush to act as a friendly reminder. Research shows that starting your day with a positive nutrition habit makes you much more likely to make better choices throughout the remainder of the day. Cue increases the probability of performing a behaviour by ~60%.

2. Put down your utensils while chewing when eating a meal or snack. This form of ‘mindful eating’ has been shown to help with appetite control and enjoyment of food. It’s a technique many elite athletes use to prevent over-eating and help maintain a healthy weight. Simple but (very) effective.

3. Remember: The compound effect of making small but meaningful improvements is huge. If you can be 1% better each day, you’ll be 37 times better one year later. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day… tiny changes = remarkable results.
